Mussitta
Trebbiano Toscano and Vermentino IGT
Blend of grapes
Trebbiano Toscano and VermentinoVinification
Mussitta was born in a rather unusual way. In 2022, due to extreme weather conditions and a severe drought lasting four months, from May through August, the Trebbiano vines experienced such intense stress that, despite some rainfall in September, they were unable to complete their sugar ripening process. The grapes had been scorched by the sun's rays, which penetrated the canopy more easily because the basal leaves had dried out as a result of the drought.
These circumstances created a unique situation. Already in the press, the must displayed a deep golden-yellow color, even after the sunburnt berries had been removed. At the same time, it showed remarkably high acidity and low sugar levels due to the interruption of ripening.
This unusual combination gave rise to a truly distinctive wine which, after bottle ageing, developed evolved aromas of dried yellow flowers, notes of preserved fruit, candied citrus and remarkable tertiary complexity. Yet on the palate it remained fresh, vibrant and full-bodied.
An unconventional wine, almost contradictory in nature, yet extraordinarily captivating. This experience inspired us to recreate those same sensations in a new wine.
To achieve this, we selected several batches of Trebbiano sourced from different vessels in our cellar, each made of different materials and each imparting its own character to the wine. Their combination brought structure, intensity and complexity to Mussitta.
We then blended this Trebbiano with a portion of young, vibrant Vermentino, a variety that in our terroir contributes freshness together with complex tertiary aromas.
This harmonious union recreates the fascinating effect we had first discovered and sought to preserve. Mussitta is a highly complex and age-worthy wine whose longevity is enhanced by its freshness. It requires extended bottle ageing to fully reveal its extraordinary potential.
